3 Little Secrets That Can Make A Vast Difference To The Power In Your Drive
Golf is played in a large arena with distances on some holes being sometimes in excess of a third of a mile, it’s amazing how the game often revolves around the smallest measurements. That half inch putt counts just the same as the 330yd drive. Likewise even very small changes in the golf club itself can make a huge difference to how far or accurate we can drive.
Take the grip itself a very small difference in the thickness of the grip will make a huge difference to how the ball flies. Underneath the grip there is some grip tape no thicker than sticky tape, now you wouldn’t have thought that would make any difference would you.
Nick Faldo a very meticulous player used to have up to 6 layers under his left hand and 2 or 3 less under his right to make them work slightly differently during the swing. If you were to put an extra layer under your grips they would feel strange!
Thicker grips will make the hands work slower through impact slowing the club down and tend to leave it a little open or pointing to the right. This will encourage a fade or slice more. Thinner grips will do the opposite and allow the wrists and hands to work faster, closing the clubface quicker through impact and promoting a draw or hook.
Pay attention next time you have your clubs re-gripped. If you are right handed the left hand should grip the club so that the finger ends only just touch the pad of the thumb. Neither should there be a gap or more commonly your fingers digging in.
The angle the club makes between the ground and shaft is called the lie of the club and getting this right for you makes a huge difference yet we are only talking about a degree or so.
At the address position the toe of the club wants to be slightly off the ground so a coin can be slid along underneath it about a third of the clubface. When the club can be travelling at up to 120 mph or beyond the weight of the clubhead will force the shaft to bend and flatten out the face.
Have a look at your divots next time you’re out and they should be pretty flat and the full width of the club face. If the toe is digging in, that will make the clubface open up and the ball will tend to fly right and of course left if the heel digs in.
Make sure you get your lies checked out during the closed winter season and hit the ball straighter next year!
A small change in the length of the shaft can make the ball fly longer and also allow your body to move more fluidly during the swing.
I used to have a bar of wood sticking out of the wall at one time when I used to make customised clubs in the shop. On it was written – If you don’t fit exactly under this then, chances are your clubs don’t suit your physique. I’ve no idea how high that was, it was just to illustrate the point that we all come in different sizes, so a standard sized club won’t fit everyone.
Gary Player used to use clubs 2 inches longer than standard to keep up with the big boys. Now that wouldn't suit many people, it's makes the arc wider but also flattens it and makes the club feel way heavier. But there again Gary wasn't just anyone!
Most club manufacturers make clubs a little on the short side and the majority of people would be helped by adding an extra quarter or half inch on the club shaft length. This will both increase the width of swing or arc and the larger the arc the faster the clubhead will travel. Also it will allow the player to stand a little taller to the ball and make keeping the spine angle constant throughout the swing a lot easier. Consistency gives more confidence, distance and accuracy.
So next time your hunting for a new set of clubs or just having some new grips, check out that they will really fit you like a glove. You will play a whole lot better and blast the ball way further down the fairway
