PTFE Fluoropolymer– A Product for the Automotive Industry
PTFE was discovered serendipitously by DuPont researchers while working with refrigerants. A frozen sample of tetrafluoroethylene polymerized into a wax-like solid, which was later given the name of polytetrafluoroethylene or PTFE.
Production of PTFE commenced. The fluoropolymer was produced idly for multiple purposes, as well as to serve a purpose in conjunction with other ingredients.
Today, PTFE, along with other fluoropolymers, are used in a wide variety of industries for multiple purposes.
Air and Hydraulic Brake Systems
PTFE is used in vehicles that host air brake systems. Over-braided hose constructions are used in air brake systems, and the fluoropolymer serves the purpose well. Particular sides of air compressors produce high temperatures, so PTFE’s resistance to raised temperatures facilitates safety and efficiency.
In addition, PTFE is used in hydraulic systems of racing cars and rally cars. The fluoropolymer is championed due to excellent flex life and resistance to caustic brake fluids at maximum temperatures. Application of high-tensile steel over-braiding lowers volumetric expansion and optimizes brake responses.
Fuel Hose Assembly
PTFE is used to combat “sour fuel.” Peroxides are produced due to the circulation of petrol. A large number of thermoplastics cannot properly address the chemical action of peroxides. To further the problem, raised working pressure and under-bonnet temperatures warrant better safety precautions.
PTFE hose and tubing constructions address the issue, and, is the reason vehicle manufacturers worldwide seek the fluoropolymer. The chemical and temperature resistance, in conjunction with braiding options, allows for the direct replacement of hose assemblies.
Lubrication and Cooling Systems
Over-braided PTFE is used for oil cooling, as well as for lubricating hosing and tubing. PTFE’s ability to replace rigid, metal piping with a flexible tube, which can withstand high-working pressures and reduce the collection of sludge, is another reason for its popularity within the automotive industry.
