How to Rip a DVD
More and more mobile devices like cell phones, mp3 player, iPod, iPhone and the Sony PSP are able to play videos. In most cases you should look out for a DVD Ripper that allows you to convert the Video in one single workflow to your mobile device.
The ripping speed of the dvd ripper depends mostly on three factors:
1. The drive speed of your computer determines how fast the DVD can play.
An 8x drive will have the capability of ripping the dvd eight times faster than the dvd will play. So if you are going to rip many dvds, it might be well worth it to invest into a faster drive.
2. CPU speed determines how fast the ripped data will be processed.
If you have got a slow cpu that will make it so the dvd ripper can't keep up with the drive and will bring about a slowdown.
3. The working memory (RAM) of your computer set the limit to how much ripped data can be processed in one chunk.
When you rip a dvd the computer has to use your RAM to store the ripped data in packages before they can be processed. The smaller your RAM, the longer it takes.
Preparing your PC
It's vital that you keep your personal computer clear of junk and keep it as lean and mean as possible. Run some spyware removal tool first, update your drivers and stop other applications from running in the background as they could screw up the process of the dvd audio ripper and the video dvd ripper. You can use a task manager, to see whether you have unwanted processes running and if desired shut it down. Finally, you will need a good quality DVD Ripper. We recommend using a ripping software that does both, audio und video ripping and that outputs a synchronized video file with audio.When looking at DVD Rippers you should look at the codec used to de- and encode the video, We have tested some and you can see our recommendation for Wondershare DVD Ripper Platinum, Ainsoft DVD Ripper Standard and Pepsky CD/DVD Ripper on the corresponding product page under "Our Review".
Using DVD ripping software is a pretty easy process:
Find the full Version of the DVD ripping tutorial including screenshots here (We are using the "Wondershare DVD Ripper Platinum" to show the steps.)
1. free the DVD from dust with a soft dry cloth if necessary
2. start your dvd ripping software
3. Load the Movie file from the DVD (which you should insert now):
In most cases the DVD will just open automatically in the software. If you rip a data DVD you select the file in the "Select Folder" dialog of your ripping software.
4. Choose the output settings (format and folder you want to rip/convert to)
Depending on your software, you can now select the format of your target device or another common format like .mp4, .wmv or .avi
5. Edit the Video (crop, set effects, trim, watermark) - optional
Crop the Video
Click on "Edit Video", go to the "Crop" tab, and set the output video aspect ratio to crop the movie video.
Apply Effects to the Video
Click on the "Effect" tab: You can now set brightness, contrast, saturation and adjust the volume to modulate the effect.The preview pane shows the result.
Set a watermark for your video:
Click the "Watermark" tab: You can now choose an image or type in a text and modify the positioning and transparency. Click "OK" to finish the editting process.
Start the ripping/conversion process:
Once you have finished setting the output format and editting options just click the "Start Button" and the conversion process will begin. That's it!
