Dry Eye – The Scourge Of The Skies

The importance of tears cannot be understated. They are enormously important to your vision by keeping your eyes healthy, moistened and clear. Tears for lubricating your eyeball are actually more complex than you may imagine and are made up of three layers – oil, water and a fatty layer. The eyes need to be lubricated in order to focus. Without effective tears you cannot see properly.

The fatty layer makes the cornea smooth for clearer vision, the water layer plays the important role of protection and the oily layer stops the watery layer from evaporating. Dry Eye can be the result of when this three tier system gets out of sync or unbalanced. If the surface of the eye becomes irritated due to the lack of the oily layer the body responds by flooding the eye with tears released from the lacrimal gland. This sounds like a perfect solution but unfortunately the tears from this gland are the same as those when you cry and guess what? These tears are not the same and do not have the magic three layers!

Dry Eye cannot be cured, once you have it, you have it for life. In the USA it is estimated that 20% of the population suffer from Dry Eye. That's a lifetime of inconvenience and irritation and for some a considerable amount of pain.

Symptoms include:

  • a scratchy feeling in your eyes including a stinging or burning sensation
  • a feeling of  ‘something' in your eyes
  • a heightened sensitivity to light
  • redness or itching
  • blurred vision
  • eye irritation while reading
  • stringy mucus in or around your eyes
  • wearing contact lenses becomes difficult

Causes of Dry Eye

  • Aging - tear production usually diminishes with age and commonly affect those who are 40 years of age or older.
  • Menopause - it is especially common in women after menopause.
  • Medications - including antihistamines, sleeping pills, diuretics and birth control pills.
  • Diseases – some diseases like Sjogren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and collagen vascular diseases affect tear production.
  • Environmental conditions – recycled air in aircraft, dry air created by air conditioning.

How DES is usually treated.

Unfortunately, once the horse has bolted your choices are limited. While there is no cure for DES, some treatments are available.

Tear conservation – this is the procedure which plugs the ducts that drain tears to conserve your natural tears. Your doctor partially or completely closes the tear ducts in your lower eyelids with silicone plugs.

Surgery – your ophthalmologist can permanently close the ducts that drain the tears to keep more tears in your eyes. For those whose DES is aggravated by an eyelid abnormality or an incomplete blink, plastic surgery might be advised.

Artificial tears and ointments - in less severe cases of dry eyes, artificial tears or lubricating ointments are the usual preferred treatment but in truth artificial tears are about as helpful as your ‘crying' tears.

It is rare that Dry Eye Syndrome will cause any permanent damage but left untreated it can cause eye inflammation, infection and corneal scarring. It is advised that medical advice is sought should you experience symptoms for a prolonged period of time.  But, it is very important to note that Dry Eye is a big red flag for the declining health of the eye. It is therefore very important to reduce stress to the eye in these cases to prevent the onset of other degenerative conditions.  Nutritionally supporting the eye along with keeping the eye well lubricated is critical and eye drops containing the antioxidant n-acetyl-carnosine do both.

N-acetyl-Carnosine (NAC) eye drops.

L-Carnosine is an amino acid which is found naturally in foods and in human cells. It could be described as an anti-aging super-antioxidant that helps to fight age-related changes in the skin, brain, heart, eyes, muscles and other tissues. L-Carnosine also protects against glycosylation (the cross linking of proteins). Unfortunately, carnosine levels decline with age and this decline is linked to the onset of certain aging disorders like cataract formation.

Certain specially formulated and clinically proven eye drops contain the important ingredient N-alpha-acetylcarnosine (NAC) which works as a carrier for L-carnosine to reach the fluid surrounding the lens of the eye called the aqueous humor. In the aqueous humor the drops activate into becoming an anti-oxidant delivering the L-carnosine where it is needed. It is only the drops containing NAC that have been clinically proven to be suitable for use in eyes. NAC transfers the carnosine to the correct area and simply using a topical L-carnosine should not be used in the eye. It has been scientifically proven that topical administration of pure L-carnosine to the eye does not lead to an accumulation of this compound in the aqueous humor. In fact, the L-carnosine is excreted and destroyed by a dipeptide enzyme called carnosinase. Also, a topical eye application of L-carnosine would release histamine which is a toxic compound and this could result in eye-problems.

NAC penetrates the cornea gradually, thus enabling a longer active therapeutic concentration of carnosine directly into the aqueous humor and therefore the lens. NAC is the only known antioxidant able to protect structural proteins of the lens from the free-radical induced oxidation process. NAC eye drops help the eye achieve the best and most protective environment for optimal eye health.

The aviation profession suffers greatly from Dry Eye Syndrome, predominately affecting pilots (especially those flying commercial aircraft) but also the cabin crew working many hours in recycled air or harsh air conditioning. NAC eye drops not only offer fantastic lubricating qualities but they also protect the eyes against potential eye health problems.  If ever there was a profession where optimal eye health and excellent vision is imperative it has to be a pilot and yet pilots work in the worst possible conditions (from the perspective of ocular health). NAC eye drops rid the eyes of toxins thus giving the eyes the best environment to stay young and healthy. NAC eye drops are a specifically formulated ocular anti-oxidant which assists the eye to heal itself.  As vision is imperative to pilots, it is worth noting that NAC eye drops can push away the signs of Presbyopia and assist with glare sensitivity and depth of colour as well as combat Dry Eye Syndrome and senile cataract.
